Soft touch velvet is a laminate applied to the card that gives it a smooth, velvety feel, a little like suede. It's the first thing people notice when they pick up the card.
The laminate also changes how colors look. It softens them and lowers the contrast, so the whole design looks a bit lighter and more muted than it does on screen. Very bright or high-contrast designs will look calmer.
It is water resistant, not waterproof. A few drops won't hurt it, but the card can't be soaked.
