How much bleed does my product need?
File Setup & Color
Bleed is the extra artwork that goes past the cut line. We trim it off at the end, but it makes sure your colors and images run all the way to the edge with no thin white line. If your design touches the edge, it needs bleed.
The amount depends on the product:
- Business cards, postcards, flyers and most paper products: 0.0625" (1/16") on each side. A 3.5" x 2" card is 3.625" x 2.125" with bleed.
- Booklets, catalogs and presentation folders: 0.125" (1/8") on each side. An 8.5" x 11" booklet page is 8.75" x 11.25" with bleed.
- Boxes: 0.125" (1/8") on each side.
- Roll labels: 0.125" past the cut line on all sides.
- Counter cards, rigid signs, magnets, banner stands, flags and table covers: 0.5" on each side.
- Vinyl banners: no bleed. Make the file the exact size you ordered and keep everything important 2" in from the edges.
All the numbers above are per side. Some guides list a total instead, which adds both sides together, so 0.0625" per side shows up as 0.125" total. Same setup, counted differently.
On paper products, keep text and logos at least 0.0625" (1/16") inside the cut line on each side, so nothing important gets trimmed. On a 3.5" x 2" card, that leaves a 3.375" x 1.875" safe area. The templates on each product page already have the bleed and safe areas marked, so starting from one is the easiest way to get this right.
